General Care Discussion :: Wierd activity at night.

Howdy, first time poster long time reader, here with a strange situation. My res is Bout 7 months old and so far every thing is well, he eats well and bask well, but for the past few weeks or so when I turn off his uvb lamp at night *leaving the heat lamp on.* He goes into a type of exploration mode climbing onto his dock and crawling around every nook and cranny. Each exploration session last about 3 minutes, he'll dive back in the water, then try again after about a minute. And this goes on for about an hour until he stops trying to do it.

Most of the time during his little exploration sessions he likes to climb on a rock I have for him up there, but he'll usually crawl around the whole place.

Heat entices them to get up there, but I'm not sure what your RES is doing. Maybe just being indecisive?

Not sure, but its routine for sure, he'll still bask during the day no problem for hours, but once night time hits he goes on his little adventures. I'll catch him in the act tonight and try to record it.

I think the heat lamp is unnecessary at night. As long as the water is kept at a proper temperature, additional basking lights are unneeded, and can be expensive to run at night.
