General Care Discussion

Hi, I'm new here and I just wanted to ask a few questions. My friend is going away for 3 days, and she has entrusted me to her..I believe Red Ear Slider because of the red slants on his head. I have no idea how to take care of him and I don't want him getting sick or anything. So any help I can get is appreciated.

Hi welcome to the site. Did your friend bring the turtle to you or do you have to go to her place? If you have the turtle, did she bring anything over for him?

I do not have anything at all, so far I kind of purchased one of those plastic storage containers and gave him a little water to sit on I suppose. I only have to keep him for 2 more days, but I really have no idea what I'm suppose to do. (I picked up the turtle at her place)

Well, if it was only for 3 days, it could have probably been left at her place (if she has the appropriate setup).

Anyway, water should be around 80F and a basking area and light should be provided. This would allow the turtle to climb out and thermoregulate. Most people try to maintain a basking temp of around 90F. Ideally the turtle should also have a UVB light, filter and submersible water heater. Though as long as you keep the water a steady 80F, it should be fine for a couple of days.

Ahh well I do not have any equipment to regulate the water, and the reason is that she has two turtles, one is staying in the tank since the one I have likes to bite on the other one. So far I'm just letting him roam my room, since he seemed miserable in the container

What do you mean by weird? Is it turtle related? If not, there's a non-turtle section on the bottom of the main forum page.

Yeah weird turtle related, she picked up the turtle so he's no longer in my care. The turtle's ear seems to be...rubbing off. As if the red was fading away, not sure if it's normal but she did point it out to me. And I also noticed when I picked him while he was sleeping to put him back into his container than he was blowing a bubble out of his nose, like in the cartoons where the characters are sleeping.

Just fading or actually coming off? Can a picture be posted?

And there are sometimes a bubble or two present on their nostril when they are submerged. I don't think it happens often and it shouldn't stream out either.

Hope this pic works, but it's sort of just fading.

As for the bubbles, he was out of the water for like 4-5 hours so I'm not sure if it's the same bubble that's there when he's submerged.

I don't think I've seen that before, though if he's an adult male, he might be becoming melanistic.
