General Care Discussion :: Just bought 4 new baby RES

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Hi all,
After quite sometimes, grieving about my male RES that passed away, I finally bought myself 4 new baby RES from pet store.
Well, they haven't been eating, since I brought them to their new home. They looked active and healthy.. but they won't eat the pellets I gave them.. :|

I am thinking that they are now adapting, so it just needs time for them to get used to a new place I gave them.. I hope my thinking is true.. :D

I haven't given them names.. I haven't any idea yet...

And my female RES, I made her basking area, real simple one, and she didn't want to get into it.. I bought her turtle bank today, I just hope that she will finally get into it, and bask.. Because I see that her scutes are shedding.. Well, it's my mistake.. :( I never gave her basking area since she was baby.. :(

I read some posts on this forum that told to put some tuna on the basking area to pursue RES to the new basking area.. I'll try it soon..

With hatchlings, I would try to get them to eat sooner than later. Try some live prey and separate them when feeding, so you know each get their own share.

Having 5 RES requires a huge commitment in space and resources. Remember to keep the hatchlings away from your adult and prepare to separate at signs of aggression.

I saw some of them eat, but not all of them. Some are still shy I think. Maybe I would try tuna, is it okay for hatchling, Steve?

I separate hatchlings away from the adult, because before I ever put them together, and the adults chased the small ones and tried to bit them. From that day on, I don't want to put any hatchlings near adult RES anymore.

Tuna is OK to entice them to eat... your main job is to keep the water 80F and make sure they eat. Once they start eating, you can concentrate on the other RES keeping aspects.

You can try boiled egg whites. Live prey is usually the most enticing thing for RES. Are they eating yet?

I don't really know that they are actually eating, but every time I leave them and come back to see them.. the food is already gone, and they poop a lot..

Hiro and Minie eat a lot. No matter if I watch or I don't. But Candy and Jelly don't want to eat while I watch. I don't really know if they eat while I don't watch them.

I tried boiled egg whites last night. Hiro and Minie, just like usual so active, swam here and there.. and eat a lot. Sometimes, they both like fighting for food.. ==" though I put enough food for them to eat..

Candy and Jelly, just sat and looked at me.. sometimes their head got into the water and just sniff-sniff the food.. but didn't really eat.. sometimes the pellet I put for them just waste away..

I don't know that they don't want to eat because I watch or what.. I once left them with a lot of food, the came back.. the pellets have gone, and they pooped a lot..

You need to separate them when feeding to make sure they're eating their fair share.
