I have a 5x2 tank which houses a female and male RES. The Female is about 8 inchs and the male about 5-6 inchs.
I've noticed past 3-4 weeks the male keeps chasing the female around. She seems very distressed and swims right into the walls from one end to another literally running away from him.
He positions himself at her head - and has twice in my observation bit her on her neck on top just under the hood of the shell. He snaps there and doesn't let go - i had to separate them. She had a scar and was bleeding.
What is this? Is this a mating ritual? What do I do? Should I separate them? Is this normal?
He is so much smaller than her - but yet seems to cause her stress and keeps chasing her. Im assuming the small one is male as the tail is quote long and the larger one has a shorter tail so assuming female.
Are they the same age? If you can, post pics of them (include pics of the nails and underside of the tail if you can) and we will confirm the sexes. I don't know much about mating .. but aggression can be bad. I know males or more prone to being aggressive. You might have to get a separate tank

He wants to mate, she want's no part of it. You should separate them because it's stressing and harming her. He might calm down afterwards, however they usually don't and aggression reappears quickly.
Yeah I think that might work too.. better yet, he should buy her that Turtle TV Tank you invented. Movie tickets are just so expensive these days you know.
