General Care Discussion :: Tank Scum

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Hey folks - been a few months since I checked in. After upgrading our turtle tank to a 40gal and adding a canister pump, things have been going pretty good.

Recently, however, we are finding alot of what I call "tank scum" - its like that crap you get on the glass door of the shower.

whats the best way to remove it? I dont want to use any chemicals for fear of hurting Sir Bruce.

thanks!

I normally use paper towels as soon as it appears. If you have a hard build up, you can use a single edge razor to scrape it off.

i have a magnetic scrubber thing called magfloat, its 2 peices with very abrasive scrubber type material on one side and soft material on the other side, you put the scrubber side in the tank and the soft side on the outside of the tank so you can scrub it without getting your hands wet. I get the same buildup as in your pic as my water evaporates and this thing takes care of it easily and quickly. I see if i can find a link so you can see what im talking about

here it is

For the hard build-up, I wipe the glass with apple cider vinegar, let it sit for a few minutes, then scrub with a tough sponge.
