I'm a new member here, so first off, I'd like to say hello.

I joined because I've been having this issue with my turtle's shell, and unfortunately, I don't have the money to take him to a vet. I'm dry docking him for the duration of the day, with 1 or 2 soaks during the day for feeding, etc. I'm doing a light scrubbing (once he is dry) with Betadine and a soft toothbrush to encourage shedding and fight off a possible fungal infection. He's retained scutes for sometime now, and I'm a little worried that this retention may have caused other problems to occur, such as his slightly swollen eyes, the dots on his shell, and a brownish/reddish spot on his back leg. He had a slight constipation issue, and would not go spare for a few whitish strands, which I quickly learned were from rotting food in his stomach. I fixed this through the use of some pellets soaked in castor oil to supplement his usual feeding. I was concerned with what came out, however. It looked like he had either ingested his old scutes and they had then turned green, or that he lad lettuce that had become hardened stuck in his stomach. I am still unsure as to which of the two it was. There is no plastic in his temporary tank, nor in the main one. Then he went normally, which was a huge relief for me.

Here is a picture of recent spots that appeared on his shell. They aren't soft, nor do pieces come off when I lightly scrape them with my fingernail. Shortly after this picture was taken, I was able to peel off almost the entire surface of his plastron, revealing a much nicer looking shell underneath, without any of the redness. However, those spots stayed, that part of the shell didn't shed.

And in this one you can see his eyes, which are completely clear. He just has some swelling on the lids. I've been feeding him lots of carrots and lettuce, as well as a few Reptomin pellets and ZooMed gourmet aquatic turtle food pellets (I don't feed him the mealworms/shrimp/cranberries in the mix too often), so I know this probably isn't a vitamin A deficiency. They gets less swollen/more swollen during the day. I know that there are other things that it could be, but the lack of consistency in the swelling/white shades to the eyelids make me think otherwise.

Image
I know this picture is a little shaky, but it's difficult to get a picture at that angle, with a squirming turtle! I don't know what this spot is, or what it's from. It's more brown than red. I've been cleaning that with the Betadine as well, and monitoring it carefully to make sure it doesn't spread. I'm still unsure of what it is.

I used to keep him with my other two turtles, I've had all three living together since they were little babies, but the other two show no symptoms of whatever it is that this guy has. He's isolated for now in a plastic tank with a heating pad. I haven't been the best caretaker of the turtles, since I was a dumb 16 year old and didn't do any research into the care of them. I thought they were adorable, and gladly took them when a friend of mine said she didn't want them anymore. I've since learned the errors of my ways and am taking care of them much better than I was; I'm planning on upgrading all three to a decent sized pond. All I need is some aquarium glue and an aerator, and I'll be set.

My main question is, how can I help him shed his scutes? I'm going to buy some wheat germ koi pellets tomorrow (hopefully), but I don't know what else I can do. He's acting completely normal, not listless, not swimming sideways, no weeping of the eyes, nothing out of the ordinary. Any advice as to what to do would be helpful, I've been pouring over every site trying to find answers, but none seem to really help. Sorry for such a long post, but I think it has all necessary information; I could be wrong, however.

You have a girl :res:

I can't tell if that's fungus in the first pic, can you post a closer pic of that area when dry? The shell looks OK, I'd need to see more if you think there is a problem. The worst type of retained scutes are those that let water seep underneath with can cause serious infections and it doesn't appear to be the case in your pics. That brown/reddish spot.. is it hard or just discolored?

I'm not sure I understand this part... "He had a slight constipation issue, and would not go spare for a few whitish strands, which I quickly learned were from rotting food in his stomach. I fixed this through the use of some pellets soaked in castor oil to supplement his usual feeding."

I thought for years she was a boy! That's always good to know, at least none of the eggs all three will eventually lay won't be fertile, that is unless I sexed them all incorrectly. The other two have much shorter nails than this one. I had always thought I had 1 girl and two boys, but but obviously that is incorrect. Well, I'll leave her name as Michelangelo, it would be weird feeling to call her something else when I've been calling her that for the past years.

The shell is completely dry in this picture. It looks a little red because of the Betadine I put on her last night. Hence why the shine. This was unfortunately the closest I could get, my camera was freaking out if I got any closer.

And the scutes are just retained. There's no water underneath them, I press and nothing is seeping out.

Here's a closer look at the brown/red spot. She finally stopped moving long enough for me to get a good shot! I felt it to the best of my ability and it felt slightly hard. Almost like a mole, but a bit firmer.

As for the last part, she wasn't really pooping. Only whitish strands would come out and that was it. I at first thought they were worms and was freaking out, but they weren't moving and had a mucus-y like feeling to them. After some looking over sites on the web, I realized it was food that wasn't being digested properly and was just rotting away in her stomach. She was kicking at her tail and seemed to be straining, but all that was coming out were the white things. I read that castor oil could help with constipation, so I gave her a few pellets that had been soaked in some. It definitely worked (she pooped a lot!)and she has been considerably more active. I can post a picture of what was coming out. The upper circle is the white strands, the lower circle is just of some dots that have stubbornly stayed on the shell. They don't have a weird smell or come off with some scraping, either. I can only figure that they are mineral deposits or trapped air.

My turtle occasionally gets one of those dark spots on the skin but I never really pay attention to them and they go away. It might be a callus, injury, etc. but seems temporary. It if gets larger or changes appearance, then I would have her looked at by a vet.

I'm not sure about the undigested food concern, it's something I'm unfamiliar with. Glad it cleared up! On the shell area that is circled, it looks like a partial shed.

Good to hear your advice on it, I was really worried that something may have gone wrong somewhere in the mix.

So you don't think the spots look like a fungus of sorts? I still am unsure of what to think of them.

From the spots shown, I don't think it's fungus. Initial fungus infections might be hard to spot, so I would need close-up shots to have a better idea.

That's unfortunately the closest I could get with my camera. I'm just taking it as her shell is very stubborn and won't come off. She's acting as she normally has, I just was overly concerned of her well being, which isn't a bad thing. She's in the tank with the others now, and is doing fine, despite the white rims on her eyes still.

And now another turtle of mine has decided to develop a spot on her eyelid. So she's being dry docked now and isolated from the others until this clears up. It never seems to end.

No, it's more of a whitish/pink spot.

That's the best picture I could get of it. I'm hoping it's nothing, and will go away on it's own.

Should I be worried about this one's shell? I saw a thread here posted a while back with a turtle showing a similar shell, but I couldn't remember what was said about it. The shell has always been lighter in color, that's not so much what I'm talking about. It's the scutes around the tail:

White spots around the eye when your turtle is dry is usually mineral deposits from the water. It's pretty normal when they are dry for extended periods.

He/she was in the water while the other one was dry docking. I took her/him out as soon as I noticed this. I'm tempted to believe you, however.
