Hi. My name is Tannis and I have a beautiful RES named Violet. I dont know how old she is. I adopted her from a pet store because she was very ill with an ear infection and shell issues. She wasnt supposed to live. Ive had her about a year now. She's at least 7-8" long. Good healthy girl. Also pregnant. I allow her to mosey around the house and when I went to look for her she was in the bathroom in one of her hiding spots and had just laid eggs. 5 and a double. She didnt want to be in her 'nesting tank' so I put her back where she was, put the eggs in a homemade incubator. She still has eggs in her and hasnt laid in hours. How long does it normally take??

are the eggs fertilized? If there hasnt been a male around you probably dont need to incubate the eggs. and what kind of hiding place was she in when she laid the eggs? Ive been trying to find a way for kaya to lay her eggs outside of her tank, she just laid eggs in her tank the other day and that was quite a job to clean up, she was gravid for at least a few weeks, maybe a month before she laid her eggs. From what ive heard on this forum indoor nesting boxes generally just stress them out more, but I would realy like to find a way that she can naturally and comfortably lay her eggs in the winter. I would incorporate a nesting spot in her basking area but that would take up too much room in the tank. I was thinking about making a basking area with a removable center, so you could take out the center of the basking area and set a container with nesting material in the hole, so it only takes up swimming space when shes gravid. Kinda hard to explain but i think it might be a good solution.

If she has a preferred place to lay eggs, let her do so. Don't disturb her when she's in the process either. Welcome to the forum!

I've allowed Violet to wander the house. She's big, friendly. She actually laid her eggs behind the toilet. She hid under the shower curtain. I there-after attempted to put her in the tank fit for laying but she wanted no part of that. I periodically put her back in the tank so she can swim and bask. Yes, there is a male in the tank...and another female.

So, she's been in the same hiding place almost all day. Should I leave her there or move her? She's out of the water...under my bedside table. Safe.

Is she done with the eggs? If so, she could go back into the tank.

I dont know. She hasnt laid any more but someone said that could take weeks

You should consider destroying RES eggs... there are just too many out there.

Steve; This is a very special turtle. If I have one of her babies, I'm happy. Responsible pet owner. The reason why I even have a side-neck is because I knew the petstore knew nothing (and further more gave wrong care info). Another question..I have 'heard' that if I cut Buddy's nails (the male) that he wont be interested in procreation or is this false? I know it's a large part of the mating and 'act' but cutting them back? I dunno...
As far as Violets babies are concerned. I'll only have this clutch. It would appear that we're down to 3 as three of them are starting to collapse. I'm also only going to give them to avid turtle people and these guys have known Violet since she was very sick.
