I have 2 Red eared sliders i got them from a friend they were in terrible condition, they had no basking area, they lived in a really small tank with barely no water, they were fed treats which arent suppose to be fed daily. I have no idea how old they are, no idea how big they are, and no idea if their male or female. I took them and they looked pretty healthy i purchased a 10 gallon tank and they have plenty of space to swim. I have a basking area with some default bulbs that came with the aquarium but no UVB/UVA bulb(will be getting soon). I have a water heater with the temp set at 85 degrees, a filter and a thermometer. A few days after i got them i noticed my smaller turtle "Titan" started developing these vertical line going down his Costal Scutes. I would put them together in a different tank that i first got to feed them and they would eat turtle pellets. I then later noticed my bigger RES "Athena(think its a female)" started getting the lines and they look like their in a 45 degree position. I tried scraping it off but the turtles go crazy and i dont want to hurt them.

Can you post a pic of the area when dry? Also, if you shoot from further away, it might be a little more clearer.

I read on an article online that this may be possible shedding im not sure because im no expert on turtles.

Shedding wouldn't be white. Does the white area feel rough?

Somewhat yes when its dry it feels like you cant just peel it off on Athena, but on Titan it feels like its in his shell what could this possibly be?

It's possibly a bone layer. It's usually physical trauma that causes this, like picking at scutes. The pics aren't too clear for me to confirm it though.

is there anythign abrasive in the tank that their shells could rub on while they are swimming? Kaya has a bad wound on the top of her shell from rubbing on her basking ramp as she begged for food.

they usually climb on eachother and scratch eachothers shells, so can this be the problem.

Unlikely, unless it was by a much larger turtle.

They seem pretty healthy they bask, eat, and swim normally.

Without clearer pics, I can't be certain. It does look like a boney layer with Athena.

How about a video? Will that help and the pics come out blurry?

A macro shot would be best. But if it's dull and had a rough feel to it, then it is a boney layer. Were any scutes forcibly removed?
