General Care Discussion :: Just wanted advice, Does Borris Shell Look healthy

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Wed Mar 21, 2012 12:50 am   Just wanted advice, Does Borris Shell Look healthy

I don't really know if this should be in urgent care, he is swimming and eating as normal but we noticed one of his scutes if you press down it is a little soft, as far as we can tell there is no scrape, fungus, or shell rot. It sort of moves. he is about 5 inches long. Also I circled the 2 spots I've had concerns however they are not close to were the scute is moving at. and the larger spot on the edge the vet stated it was healing and could be a scar and the white spot has been there but getting smaller over the month or so i've had him. any advice would be great and thank you for looking

this is the only picture I can get to upload, he is a little wet though. they said others were to big
sorry pictures are not the best of quality I took them with my phone.

I agree with what the vet said and the white spot i guess looks like an unshed scute kinda but cant say as like you said the photos arent that great. Since you said its getting smaller i guess everything is fine with your turtle.

If it's shedding it might lift up, but not "move". The scute towards the front looks like shedding, the one near the rear might be a problem... a better picture would help.

When I say move I mean if you press on it it will kind of goes down and water comes out. I mean I assume its water because it doesn't smell and its clear. I didn't try to lift it up or anything my husband and I were scared we would hurt him. I will get better pictures up tomorrow, we finally got all unpacked from moving and found my camera. I just want to see if anyone had any ideas before I went to the vet because they are expensive.

Yes, that sounds normal. Post pictures of the other area if you can.

I am wasn't able to get pictures up today, we did notice though when we checked to see if the scute would lift up it was soft under there and had a slight odor. but I did get a call from my vet office saying they are doing a free visit for new patients in the month of march and so we have an appointment tomorrow and so we took the oppurtunity to get Borris checked out.

Good luck! If there is a smell, there might be some shell rot :(

Thats what scares me were hoping since its in such a little spot it isnt to bad. And our vet told us when she first saw him it looks as if he was not taken care of well from his previous owners and too just watch him because they get sick slow. So we will see. We were hoping it wouldnt happen this soon to see her again though.

we went to the vet and there is minor shell rot she gave us cream and some antibiotics just in case there is an infection too. Borris doesnt like the medicine to well we had to fight a little for the first dose but he took it.

I know this sounds bad but I forget the antibiotics name but the cream is Silvadene.

Silvadene is good stuff. It's mentioned all the time to treat fungus. Are you doing any dry docking too?
