General Care Discussion :: Beach Shops

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

So here I am at the beach again. Some may remember, but I got Angelina a year ago while at the beach. I was totally lied to and had no idea what I was getting myself into. That being said, I love my little gal and am so happy to have her.

I was at one of the beach shops yesterday, and they had turtles for sale (seems most of them here do). My sister was getting a henna tatoo, and I was over looking at the tons of little turtles crammed in a 10 gallon tank with no light, no heater, little filtration. A lady with two young boys walked over. She said awww... look at the turtles. Then she yelled for her husband/boyfriend. In the meantime I decided to tell her about the turtles. I explained that I have one. I explained that they would get big and told her the potential size depending on if it was a male or female. I didn't have to say anymore. After the size information she walked away.

Maybe I didn't do the right thing. Maybe I should have kept my mouth shut and hoped they would buy a turtle and have the means to take care of it the proper way. Is it better to let them be bought and hope people take care of them or let them be crammed in a small tank (where I'm sure they eventually die if not bought).

I don't know what the right answer is. Is death better or a life of misery??

All I know is it should be illegal for these places to sell these turtles and lie about their care. I guess actually it is illegal to sell them considering the were only about an inch long. UGH!

I think you did the right thing. Sadly, there is little we can do to stop it and those poor folks probably would've dumped the turtle into a pond, threatening the other wildlife there. I would have complained to the store owner or the property management. Maybe even complain to the health department. The profit can't be that great to ignore any bad publicity.
