General Care Discussion :: Why is the rock in my turtle tank changing colors

I found a rock in the park today for my turtle to sit on when he wants to come out the water. a few hours later the rock starts turning a reddish pinkish color on certain areas of the rock and left reddish pinkish stains on the bottom of the tank. I thought my turtle was bleeding at first but I guess its the rock. Why is it changing colors?

Do you know what type of rock it is?
Softer minerals will dissolve or break apart if immersed in water.

Did you disinfect the rock by boiling or baking it?
The rock can also harbor bacteria or algae that is now growing in your tank.

Personally I take the rock out.

Pinkish colors could be associated with bacteria, but it would not change in only a few hours. I'd remove it for now.

probably why you should always put new materials in water and rinse first.
