General Care Discussion :: Mating/Egg Laying Question

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Sun Dec 23, 2012 10:19 pm   Mating/Egg Laying Question

I have two Sliders, one male, one female. The female slider has been keeping her organ out and covering it up with her back legs, but she just kind of lays there holding her front side up. The male turtle at this time is quite interested in what she is doing. Was wondering if anyone had any tips for me on exactly what is going on. I do have a nesting area for her which she visits multiple times a day and hangs out, but doesn't dig or anything in the substrate. Possible she doesn't like the substrate?

Thanks if Advance.

Keeping organ out? There should be nothing coming out of the cloaca. Sounds like a prolapse if something is coming out and staying out. Can you further details on this.

I couldn't tell you about females, but I do know that males sometimes participate in "fanning", which basically means they're showing off their gargantuan penis to the rest of the world. Our male turtle does it from time to time. It's huge and it's black and he'll stick it out for a couple of seconds and then it goes back in.

Problem is he is talking about his female. If he was talking about his male then yes it be fanning. Seein as its female nothing sticking out out.

I will try and see if I can get a photo/video of it the next time, but when you go by the tank when this is occuring, she will stop. I can also not be 100% sure that the slider I received from Petco was a female as told by the sale associate.

Can you post a pic of her? Males 4" or bigger have longer claws, longer tail and a pointer snout.

Agreed, that tail is very large. So that was his penis you were seeing.

I have seen them both mate. Both parts are different in size and shape.
