Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Wed Feb 27, 2013 7:46 pm   Little white worms

Hello,
Lately I have been noticing little white worms in my mississippi map turtle's tank. I did a complete tank cleaning (taking everythingout rinsing it all cleaning the filter etc.) bu they are still there :? I feed my turtle outside of his tank so i'm not sure how they live :/ I have done research and I think they may be Nematoads (Not exactly sure) anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks

Could be a lot of things... but first I'd check his poop to rule out any parasites.

Sounds like pin worms or another parasite. Ouch.

Back before I joined this site, I used stones from the garden to make a basking area. I put them in the tank without boiling/baking them. Next thing I know I had an infestation of worms in the tank.

Try this: Dry dock the turtle in a box on a towel for a day or two until he poops. If you find worms on the towel and poop then you know it's an internal parasite and probably need something from the vet to treat it.

Otherwise it's in the tank. Most of these worms are harmless. The only way to get rid of them that would be a complete teardown and disinfection of the tank and brand new filter media.
