General Care Discussion :: "White Stuff" Floating On Water Surface

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Not too sure what it is. Water is normal in all areas (PH Nitrates etc..) 120 gal tank with 75' water temp.
So a couple of weeks ago I noticed it and cleaned it out with a fish net. Its slimy. Water was normal then it returned. I would guess its sperm but I was under the impression that we have a female turtle. Any ideas
This was from 3 weeks ago when it was thick

Your turtle might be shedding, but I don't know. Do you have a filter? That is a female.
Turtles:
Dexter (RES)
Shelby (RES - gone and I feel really really bad).
Miracle (Box Turtle - Given to me after Shelby left us).
Orion (Mississippi Map Turtle).

That looks a bit more than shed. In that case, there would be see-through bits of skin within the water versus on top. It looks like a female (unless she is a baby).
The first picture looks similar to urates, which is typically a sign of possible dehydration or overly high-protein diet.
The second picture throws me for a loop, though. I haven't seen urates create speckles. Odd.

Thanks for the replies :)
Filtration is Fluval FX5. Her main diet is "Zilla Aquatic Turtle Food" http://www.amazon.com/Zilla-11674-Forti ... urtle+food
Thats all shell eat besides feeder fish which is about 8 once a month.
So you think the stuff is from her then?

Not really sure, but i would think that the filter would pick it up by now.

It floats. The water is clear as can be.

I had the same problem and my filter took it up, but it wasn't on the bottom of the tank. Just clean the tank out and refill.

I'd guess sperm too. Do you have a pic of the tail?

I'd try some different pellets, including some koi pellets (that contain wheat germ).
