General Care Discussion :: Laying Eggs

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

This is a topic I've been pretty nervous about facing for a few years now and for some reason, my RES has never shown signs of trying to lay eggs. I've had her for about 5.5 years and she was 3 inches long when I got her (probably just under 3). I'm pretty sure she's sexually mature (based on what I've read on other websites) but has never displayed any issue not having a space yet to lay eggs.

Can someone give me some information on if I should be expected eggs ever? What to do if it happens? Why she hasn't seemed to try for years?

Thanks!

Put the eggs on the incubator.

Signs of being gravid:
Inactivity
Trying to escape tank

Their are others but these are the main ones. Also, check her plastron for eggs.
Turtles:
Dexter (RES)
Shelby (RES - gone and I feel really really bad).
Miracle (Box Turtle - Given to me after Shelby left us).
Orion (Mississippi Map Turtle).

A RES kept alone might never have to lay eggs, that's something we can't predict. Look out for restlessness, kicking/digging with hind feet, lack of appetite for starters.

severe lack of appetite and digging are the most common, paddling is very noticeable.
