General Care Discussion :: Relocation to a smaller tank

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Hi all,

On Sunday evening I was busy cleaning my tank, a Juwel Vision 450, that I have 1 male RES (approx 4" SCL, 1 and a half years old) living in when I noticed a crack on the lower left corner of the curved face. I immediately lowered the water level to a point where I was sure that the pressure would be low enough to ensure that it didn't break or start leaking. I have pulled his first tank out, a 3ft x 1ft tank that has a max water depth of 7" at the current set up as a temporary "holiday home" until I can get the Juwel agents (or insurance) to sort out his big tank.

Now comes my BIG issue, I leave this coming Sunday, 7th July, for 4 weeks of training for my new job, which may or may not be immediately followed by being out of country for 8 weeks before returning home. Basically my question is, at worst case scenario of being away for 3 months, will he be alright in the small tank?

I appreciate any help, I'm a bit worried about my little guy (and highly annoyed at the tank)

Thanks,
Sheldon

It's not great but doable. Who will be keeping an eye on him? You could look into a quick replacement on Craigslist or use a larger plastic storage container if you want something larger.

Hi Steve, thanks for the reply. My girlfriend will be looking after him when I'm gone, with the only exception being filter cleaning, I have a friend that is willing to do everything with the filters when needed. I live in South Africa, so don't really have craigslist. I was thinking of getting a new temporary tank or a plastic storage container, but I don't have money at the moment for the first option as I have pretty much been out of work for the majority of the year, and I don't have enough time to create an entire new set up, his old tank is pretty much plug and play. I'm hoping that once my training is done then I will be given at least a few days back home to sort everything out before being sent off for 2 months, it would make me much happier, and give me a much happier turtle as well.

A storage container should only be filled up about half way, but they can definitely be useful. I've found them as large 60 gallons, hopefully you can find one that is suitable. I would try to get the turtles settled in as soon as you can, as you would know their behavior better than anyone. Good luck with the training!
