General Care Discussion :: White Spots / Dry Shell Rot

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Well folks after looks of looking and research I think the mysterious white patched on my Bob are not the result of hard water minerals (posted pics a few months ago?). I think they may be what Austin's Turtle Pages call "Dry Shell Rot". I'll try to get some of my pics up. In the mean time I went a ahead and bought some Acriflavine to try out the "Alternative" treatment on the web site. Seems lots of people have used this stuff w/ good results. I must say, be prepared!! This stuff makes your water look like antifreeze! It is bright green. I'll post results as we go but it is expected to take 5 weeks. I may be leaving the country soon so I thought this would be easier for the wife to continue if I have to leave before we're done.

You probably have, but if you use carbon, have you taken it out of the filter while you're treating your turtle? I'm curious to know the outcome. (I have a bottle of the stuff, but have never had to use it).

Marisa,
Taking the carbon out is one of the first things they tell you to do. I'm following the program to a tee. Today will be our third week so far. I don't see any great improvement but some of the affected scutes are starting to look like she'll be shedding them soon. The treatment hasn't affected her appetite or behavior at all, which I take to be a good sign. Again, if you go this route be prepared, your tank water will be bright!

Just had to check. Sometimes people are not so meticulous about following directions. :)

I've tried Acriflavine as a topical solution with no sucess. Good luck and keep us updated.
