General Care Discussion :: Shell and skin

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

The Captain is shedding, I couldn't get a good picture of him in the water because he's either super active, or hiding, but it's thin wispy skin, and it's getting all over my tank. I spent the afternoon cleaning the water. He's been shedding for about two days.

From my research, I believe this is due to water temp. I can't keep the temp under 82/83 degrees because I live in South Louisiana and my house is at best about 87 degrees during the day. At night, my AC kicks it down a lot, but during the day... it's hot y'all.

Also... I'm reading a good bit about shell health, but pictures speak a thousand words:

Is the spacing worrisome? I've cut down on his pellets (he gets two or three a day) and I successfully introduced romaine lettuce this week. He loves it... he even surfs around on the lettuce leaf sometimes.

Thanks for any advice!

Yes, cut down on the pellets. If family/guests/roommates have access to the Captain, then sort out his daily pellets in a pill box.

It's great that he's eating lettuce, thats a big step. Don't over do it at first and ease into it. I prefer using lettuce in mornings since they digest better while basking.

He eats the heck out of lettuce. I put a piece the size of a credit card in there and he ate most of it (didn't eat the rib) in a day. He also took a bite out of Clevon the mystery snail. I don't think he likes being on a diet.

Well, at least he has healthier choices.

Might be the start of shedding and you're seeing an air pocket. Can you post a picture?

We just got this turtle and we didn't know we were going to need so much stuff for its care so the only things we can afford right now is a basking lamp and a tank. Tomorrow we are going to get a basking platform for it. We cant afford a heater or thermometer and i forgot what else it needs..
