General Care Discussion :: HAVING RES AND REEVES TURTLE IN SAME TANK

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Hi, I was thinking of getting a REEVES turtle (black bridged leaf turtle) and putting it in the same tank as my two RES. I have a 150 litre tank and all the proper equipment but was just wondering if it is OK to mix these turtles in the same tank?

How big are your two RES(tip to tip of shell not including curve)? A 150 litre tank (I believe that's about 40 gallons) will be good only for two small RES. Recommended size of tank per RES is 10 gallons (approx 38 litres) per inch (2.5cm) of turtle. The more turtles you have the larger tank/pond and equipment you will need. This info should be taken into consideration before adding more turtles to the environment.

Also, specific needs should be addressed for any other species being introduced. If their basic needs differ from the RES then they should have their own habitat. I've just done a quick search on the Reeves turtle and from what I found they do have some what different habitat. I suggest searching for something like "care sheets reeves turtle" etc. This will help you.

PS. sorry if my conversions are off - it's not my best skill. :D

I just want to add that even if they did have the same habitat requirements (which they don't) there should still be a quarantine period of at least 90 days to ensure the new one is healthy.

The Reeves turtle remains a relatively small size compared to RES (especially females). I'm not sure how much different their habitat needs are (I've read they can be kept similar to the way sliders are kept), but since RES can be agressive, I'd be cautious about keeping them together, especially if the habitat was not a large one. The two species also are native to different geographic areas, and I've read it's not a good idea to keep turtles from different regions together.

I have issues with posting pictures on here...I mentioned this somewhere else not to long ago. Anyway, I found it easier to post my photos on yahoo photos and then provide the link. Or find someone who knows what they are doing and get detailed instructions, lol.

Any critter in there will either be eaten or might harm your turtle.

I know it sounds nasty and my Girlfriend doesnt let me do it if she is home, but my turtles love to eat small goldfish, I started off with mountain minnows but they were too fast and it took about a month for them to be munched, but goldfish take about 15 minutes.

Goldfish are fatty and prone to carry parasites. Live minnows should be a rare treat.
