Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Fri Apr 28, 2006 9:09 am   vacation ????

HI I'm going on vacation for 5 days. I don't have anyone who can come and feed my turtles?? I leave tuesday am , so i'll feedthem before i leave. then i come back sunday eve and will feed them so will they be ok for 3 days without food??? i usually feed them every other day. I've had them since july/sept '05 (got them as babiesabout 2 inches diameter each). when i go i will have the timer on so they'll still get the light while i'm gone!!!

also does anyone know if male turtles grow faster than female turtles???
All and any advice is greatly appreciated.

thanks!!

I would put some live anacharis and maybe some feeder fish or ghost shrimp in the tank. I guess live plants is a suire shot because they wont go bad and the live prey is there for protein, if they were really hungry they would prolly take advantage and try and hunt the things that are in the tank.

There are automatic feeders that you can buy for them if you use food such as reptomin.

This is about the same length of time I had to leave mine just a couple weeks ago for the first time and he was just fine. :)

Thanks, I'm going to petco today. to see what they have. I couldn't find an automatic feeder on line. I'll look at the plants. i am nervius to leave them with the shrimp while i'm gone, i think they're still to small for that.

If the turtle is a full-grown adult (mine's *at least* 16 yrs old, that's the time she has been with me & she was already 6 inches long when I got her), I don't worry about her if I have to go on vacation for 5 days. If it is longer than that (like 2 weeks, for example), I have a friend come feed her a couple of times.

Turtles have a very slow metabolism and as long as they are healthy & the tank conditions are right (warm/clean), they are just fine on their own if you are gone for a long weekend.
