General Care Discussion :: turtle intestine or poop (sorry to sound gross)

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Tue Jul 04, 2006 11:39 am   turtle intestine or poop (sorry to sound gross)

hi!

i've noticed my turtle for several times that when his waddle-paws and tail are stretched out (while swimming) there is this large brown poop or intestine-like comes out of his anus. he doesnt push that hard for the brown thing to come out (like he's constipated) and retracts it when he loosens up and swims/runs away when i approach the tank.

i havent seen my turtle poop in a while (he usually does it after feeding). i read somewhere that if the turtle is sick, they can poop their intestines...but mine seems pretty healthy. he's very active and he's eating well. i basically feed him turtle pellets though. could it be the diet or lack of certain vitamins?? or maybe i rub his tummy and that makes him push his rectum out??

i more and more convinced that i have a girl turtle (despite the "he"). anyway, i'll take some pictures and the instances when the brown thing is coming out.

happy july 4th!!! :D

Take some pics so we can be sure, but it sounds like he's showing you his penis, otherwise known as 'fanning'. As long as it goes back in on it's own he's fine.

LOL! he's showing off his penis??

anyway, after i posted my message, i checked on my ninja and saw a big pile of poop. i'm guessing that he was constipated. anyway, if i see it happen again, i'll take some pictures.

thanks.

when a male turtle begins fanning, does that mean he is ready to mate? why do male turtles do that? to cool off?? this is happening frequently.

I don't think that means they are ready to mate because I've heard of very immature male turtles doing it. I think it's just a 'guy' thing... something male turtles will do from time to time.

Not having experienced this personally, I'll let someone else verify whether this is fanning or not. I think it is though.

He's a boy. Is he your only turtle? I've noticed when my male RES fans, its for a very brief moment. Certainly not enough time to take a pic - not that I want to take a pic :)

Anyway, the penis is much larger than that. He's not showing all of it now but you will eventually catch a glimpse of it.
