General Care Discussion :: Questionable Male or Female Theory....

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

When I got my baby RES here in HK, I asked the pet shop owner for a male RES...and I asked her how she can tell between males & females, and she said males have more spots or markings on the belly area of the shell compared to the female ones....

I wonder.... could this be true?

As stated in previous posts, the pet shops in Hong Kong are not nice at all...so I don't really trust what the owner said...

any ideas?

My male and female both have spots on their bellies...although the female has more. I don't see this to be a sexual characteristic. Not one that I have heard of anyway.

Here is a picture of my male

Here's my female

The pictures of the female were taken when she was a hatchling, those spots have continued to expand.

There is no relationship between the pattern on the plastron and the sex of the turtle.
