General Care Discussion :: Just wondering..

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

kay so I just changed my whole tank around.. which after I realized was a stupid idea because my baby RES just got used to the old way.. I added more water too. He is having trouble swimming though.. he can get air which is good, but he can't swim very well to get around. Does anyone think he will learn how to swim soon, because he will have to just stay in one spot if he doesn`t. I also put him on the new basking area so he will know where it is. lol
Help please :)

How much water did you add? Does he have anything to rest on if he tires, like a floating plastic plant? If he's really small, it would be good to add more water in stages, so he gets used to the depth of the water more gradually.

They are good swimmers, however, so once he's used to the deeper water he should be fine. (Something for him to rest on would be good, though.)

As Marisa said, he is probably getting used to the deeper water. We recently added an above tank basking area for Zeke as he's stuck in a 30 gallon tank right now. So we added probably 5-6" of water to his tank, he was a little leary at first, took a couple days to explore the basking spot, now loves to sleep in it, hangs out on the ramp and basks now more than he ever has. I would say it probably will take a couple of days to adjust to the newer water level, how is the turtle acting otherwise?

He is acting fine. Just isn't eating, he hasn't eaten since I got him (saturday)... but I think it was stupid of me to change everything around.. because he was JUST getting used to the old way.. but I take him out to eat.. and if he doesn't eat.. I put him back and try again later. I am feeding him turtle pellets. I am just going to go cheak on him now. so I will come back with the news.

I would keep being patient, It may take him up to a week to start eating....he has had a lot of change in his life this past few days. Some take a while to eat. I would start offering him other stuff such as romaine etc.

If you've got the tank how you want it (and it's good for your turtle), don't do any more rearranging for a while so he has a chance to get use to it. Is his basking area easy for him to get on?

When you take him out to eat do you put him in a bowl of water or is he in a dry container?

I am moving everything back to the way it used to be. He was just getting used to it.. so I'm moving it back.

and when I take him out to eat, the container has water in it.
