Currently i'm using a 10 gallon tank, but will be using a 36 gallon pretty soon. So I was hoping to get some recommendations on which filters I should look at.

I know that the XP3 is very good, however I don't have the money to spend on it... and plus the thing is HUGE! I think it costs like $189.99 canadian at my local stores... but anyways I've looked at the EHEIM filters and the ECCO Canisters have caught my attention. These filters look good, and are affordable but there is one thing that I'm quite puzzled about. On the description for the EHEIM it claims that the model "2234" is meant for a tank up to 60 gallons, however it also says it can perform at 145 gallons per hour. In comparison, my current Tetra Whisper 40I filter claims to perform at 170 gallons per hour and is recommended for tanks up to 40 gallons! Somebody please explain to me what's going on?

I don't know if its much good to you coz you might not get these in the US, but I use a AquaOne CF1000 .. good for about 265 gallons per hour. cost me about ... $130 NZD.. ($86 USD).. its a pretty good cannister filter

I personally like the Aquaclear filters.. it's a waterfall type so they make some noise in a turtle tank because the water level isn't full. They are inexpensive and do a terrific job :)

Are they easy to clean? And yes I noticed the prices for AquaClear products are quite affordable, but I was a bit skeptical about it.

I found them really easy to clean. The only problem I had with them if any, is sleeping with them in the bedroom with the noise of the water, but that can be fixed.

I had one of those for years, and it was always reliable. The only tricky part about cleaning it was the intake tube.
Keep in mind you'll want to purchase a filter that's rated for about 3x your tank size.
I'm not sure how much you have to spend, but my suggestion would be to look at ebay. I'd never used ebay before, but when I upgraded my tank I found a 1 week old Fluval 404 (same size as the xp3) for $80 cdn + $20 shipping. That's half the price as in stores...

I use a Cascade. You can get them in any size from 400's to 600's for the bigger tanks. All you have to buy is sponges to go in them every month instead of buying the wisper filter packs every week or so. The Cascades save you money and they can be easily cleaned. To clean them, all you have to do, is take the sponge out of the filter and squeeze it under running water until it is clean. Then put it back in the filtration unit. You can do this until you can hold the spong up to the light and can't see through it. But it will take awhile for this to happen. I've used the Cascade filters for two years and they are great!!! Hope this helps. :)

I just recently got a Flueval 4 submersible & really like it so far. It is supposed to be rated for up to 57 gallons, which is perfect for me since I have a 90 gal tank & only fill it up 2/3 of the way anyway.

I should mention also that I don't feed my RES in her aquarium. I feed her in a plastic laundry container filled with water (which I discard after every feeding) so this helps keep the water cleaner.

I also use Aqua Clear and it works wonders. I use to use a Duetto submersible filter but it really sucked, in about 5 days the water would turn yellow. So then I went out and bought a Aqua Clear and it turned my water clear!!

Cleaning it is easy too. Look around the board and ask around on how to clean it if you buy one, some people will give you detailed instructions on how to clean it.

From the homegrowers soul, straight to his lungs. That's the method that I myself find fun. Start from seed and then you'll see, just how fun homegrowing can be.

I use an XP3 for a 55 gal tank which i have about 2/3rds full. This is for 2 1.5" RES's. I can add biological media which will allow me to remove the ammonia and such from the water, by using ceramic media. Also i can do mechanical and chemical filtering... I paid 104.99$ with the petsmart pricematch, and havent looked back sense.

It is very quiet as well, and the water stays clear. It even makes enough current in the tank that the anachris plants leaves that have been sheaded are moved across the tank.
