I believe that most people who have done overnight traveling have used rubbermaid containers for the hotel room. Something that will hold enough water for hydration and you can even use your heater to keep things warm. I wouldn't worry about the lighting, a couple days won't hurt them.
As for in the car, you want to make sure he can stay warm, bundled in some towels. Don't transport in water, or in a container that he can move around in too much. Make sure he isn't in any direct sunlight, or any drafts from open windows, a/c, or heating vents.
