General Care Discussion :: wheezing or hissing?

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Fri Jan 19, 2007 3:18 pm   wheezing or hissing?

Normans water temp is 78
His basking platform is 93
Hes eating, very active.
I dont take him out much but i did today and layed a towel down on my kitchen floor and put him on it and let him walk around.

Now as soon as he took off moving on his towel he was making a sound. He made this sound the whole time he was walking but wasnt making it when i was carrying him or even when he was just chillin on the towel figuring out which way he was going. I think he heard the sound of the water filter from the tank in my room and thats the direction he took off in, hissing on the way. Never heard this before since i got him back in June. No signs of any sickness, he seems to be a pretty healthy turtle. Like all ive read about RI and stuff with open mouth breathing and gasping etc. He doesnt do none of that. So im just hoping that he may have been hissing because he may have been stressed or scared. So i picked him up and put him right back in his tank and gave him 2 turtle treats cuz i felt bad and he ate them right up and is swimming around, foraging and doin his thing.
Is hissing normal? Is there a way to know if it was a hiss or a wheeze? Do they sound alike? I dont think i have anything to worry about i think he was just a lil scared but i had 2 get some more opinions. Thanks in advance.

Here is a pic i took this morning.
3 1/2 inches long.
And he wasnt even 2 inches when i got him in june.

If he is acting normal/eating/swimming right, then it was probably a hiss, its his way of telling you "hey back off i was chillin here!" lol.

Most turts do not like being out of their tank in an unfamilar setting. Some adult turts will be OK with it, but only when they come to trust you fully, and that could take years.....

Thank you all for the replies. I figured and was hoping it was a hiss but wanted to make sure. Guess he doesnt like the kitchen yet. He is usually fine in my room on the towel but the new room musta scared him. Wont do that again for a while.

And RED....ty for the comment. I try. =)
