General Care Discussion :: Dents in shell?

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Today when i was holding my turtle (to see if everything was going OK) i noticed something strange that ive never noticed before.

As i felt on the lower right side of the carapace,to my surprise,it felt like a dent.

The reason im surprised is because neither of my turtles have ever fallen from my hands or escaped from the tank.Ive only let them out once, and i watched them the whole time, the other turtle doesnt have any dents and i doubt that he is strong enough to have caused the dent in the other turtle.

Anyways, here is some info on my setup.

How big is your turtle? 2 inches
How long have you had it? 5 months

What is the water temperature? 78 degrees
Are you using a water heater? yes
How much water is in there? 18 gallons
Are you using a water conditioner? yes
Are you using any filtration? yes

What is the basking temperature? 93 degrees
Is there a basking light? yes
Is there a basking platform that is easy to climb on? yes
What kind is it or what is it made out of? zoo med dock
Is there a UVB light? yes

What have you been trying to feed it? Reptomin/Zoo med aquatic turtle food/Turtle bites/Wardley.Unlike my other turtle,he wont go anywhere near vegetables.

When was the last time your turtle ate? This morning.

How big is the tank/pond/enclosure? 20 gallons
Is the tank near a window? no
Is the tank in a room with a lot of activity? no

Have you read the Basic Care section? yes
Have you searched the forums for similar situations? yes

Is there any other unusual activity/symptoms? No,he is eating/basking/swimming,normal.

Any idea of what it could be? I made a vet apointment already, but i would like to know if anyone has ever gone through this.

A pic of the dented area would be helpful.

I dont have a camera, plus you cant tell the dent is there unless you feel the shell.

No shell is perfectly smooth, I wouldn't worry about it unless there was a traumatic event.

You have to decide that. If you're uneasy about the dent, and if taking him to the vet will give you peace of mind, then take him. If you don't think it's serious, don't.
