(That's a beautiful turtle by the way.)

I see some pits and white on the shell. Is that what concerns you? Is the shell soft anywhere?

Lots of people seem to have turtles with shell problems. Lots of things can cause shell problems - poor water quality, not basking enough, wrong kind of lighting, dietary problems, physical injury, vitamin deficiency, lack of calcium in the diet. Often people get turtles from places where they were housed in less than ideal conditions and the turtles come with the problems already existing. The best cure overall is to make sure you've covered all the bases where habitat and diet are concerned.

On treatment, here's a thread on a pretty good and simple approach:

http://www.redearslider.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=11

Read all the way down. The next to last comment by Marisa has good instructions on treating a shell problem. Why don't you try it and, after a few weeks if the shell seems not to be better or getting worse, take your little guy to a vet.

Good luck!

If you are concerned about the dark areas in between the green scutes, that color is totally normal. As the babies grow, the shell stretches/grows and eventually fills in with more color (it won't be so black).

Do you have a UVA and UVB lamp for him to sit under? Do you have a basking area where he can totally get out of the water? What do you feed him?
