hey everyone. i've got a small canister that straps to the side of my tank ..rated for 30-40 gal but i've only got about 7 gal of water in my tank. It seems to do okay, but i'm noticing a light gray sandy sediment at teh bottom of the tank. I'm sure it's just waste .. but the water seems clean. how can i get a filter to suck up whats on the bottom of the tank? any ideas here? :?:

i use a turkey baster to get it up manually. it's a little time consuming (just five minutes, not a big deal) but it works.

A filter just filters water. It won't pick up solids unless they are suspended. A turkey baster, like pumpkinsherbet said, will do the job or a small syphon, sometimes called an aquarium vacuum, does it real well too.
