General Care Discussion :: Big tank, more RES?

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

I have recently bought a brand new 240 gal. tank, and both my RES are about 3 in. I was wondering if I could get one or two of mybrosteve's baby RES's, or should I just keep the two I have, and wait for them to grow. Do you think a 240 gal tank, would be to small for 4 full grow RES?

Thanks for the suggestions,

Nathan Radle.

Four RES, average length 10", would technically need a 400 gallon tank!

I'm probably going to be in a distinct minority here, but if I were you I'd probably go for it. 240 gallons is a monster tank and maybe it's not logical but I feel like the RES could find room to co-exist in it, if they are going to co-exist at all. I know those little babies of mybrosteve's need a good home.

If you do it you'd have to be sure the new ones are protected from the bigger ones until they are all pretty close to the same size.

good luck

Holy cow! That's HUGE! I mean some ponds aren't even that large. ;) I'd say go for it too, but then again I'm a newbie.

Yeah, if i get them I am going to use the old set up for quarantining them, for at least 3 mouths. If worst comes to worst, I will just find a good home for the female(s)( I don't want to have to deal with eggs.).

I think the 10 gal per inch rule is a good guide when you're dealing with less than 150gal. I think once you get into the really big aquaria, you can let it slide a little. Just make sure there is enough area for everyone to bask comfortably, even setting up more than one basking area might be helpful. Also, be ready to house them separately if there are signs of aggression.

That's going to be a really nice setup! ;)

Wouldn't it depend if the full grown RES (or some of them) were females? A 240-gallon tank sounds big, but for full grown RES, if they were females, it somehow loses some of that bigness to me. I start thinking of a pond...

So your saying I should just stick with my two in the tank? Or buy a pound?
