General Care Discussion :: Baby Turtles

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Mon Apr 30, 2007 3:43 pm   Baby Turtles

Okay, where do most of you get your baby turtles from? Is legal in some states to sell turtles less than 4"? I know in our state and I think all the neighboring states, it's illegal, unless it's for educational purposes, or something like that. I don't have the space for anymore turtles at the moment, but I would really love to get a baby map turtle some day. They just aren't available in that size around here. Has anyone had any success with mail order?

Thanks!

I got mine from a pet shop..:( I wish i didnt get them from there. I've heard good things about turtle pimp - I believe they carry map turtles. And as for shipping live turtles, i have only heard one bad experience and it was from a woman who ordered two RES from that evil site that I will not mention. They arrived sick and one of them was missing a body part. She posted realy angry and wanted to take action. It wasnt too long ago. I can probably find the post.

In SC they are for educational reasons only but..... you don't have to prove it. They jut have to have it posted and tell the person that is buying them.

Mine just wandered into the back yard one day just before Thanksgiving. I don't usually see them in pet stores.

Mail order is iffy at best. Plus I think it is illegal (federal interstate) to even ship turts under 4". The loophole is if it is for scientific or educational purposes. At any rate, it's hardly enforced. If you HAVE to go by mail order go with a reputable dealer, pay extra to have it shipped overnight, and pick it up at the airport....
I suspect all my kids were purchased at Chinatown, NYC, then dropped on me (as a gift  ). It's illegal too, but again, hardly enforced.

I got my two (1 RES, 1 MAP) from some friends who got them from a friend who got them from a carnival. I think it's so sad that turtles are carnival prizes like fish. I bet most of them don't survive a month.

If I was looking for another baby I'd go to one of these stupid carnivals and rescue as many turtles as I could.

Ok, thanks for all the suggestions. :)

That TurtlePimp site looks pretty good and they got the FaunaClassified's Good Guy award. That's a good testimonial right there! Thanks for the reference, Eddie! :) By the way, can you PM me with the name of the bad web site dealer? I don't want to make the mistake of ordering from them in the future if I ever do get another turtle.

Thanks! ;)

when i got my two in kentucky, they said that i would have to sign a release stating that the turtles were for educational purposes only. i flipped through the names an found one in big letters and all caps KEVIN. also, the E was backwards. i asked the lady if she knew about the laws and she said that she did, but the police that come in dont care. they said they have better things to do than deal with a bunch of turtles. To me, thats just lazy but it did let me get my little dudes so im conflicted ;) :?

Sounds like the police feel like me...the law is kinda ridiculous. Kids can put many many other things in their mouth that could harm them more. It's up to the parents to child-proof everything, including the turtle tank. Not sure why the government stepped in on this one.

call some specialty reptile stores. It's illegal here in PA to but reptile stores still sell them the size of a quarter. Not petsmart or petco or any thing but small rept places. Where are you located?
