General Care Discussion :: yay!

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Sat May 05, 2007 12:25 pm   yay!

tonight we're going over to my friend's house to watch the fight on ppv. this is the friend with the two turtles that aren't being taken care of. since the time i can get over there to check on them is so sporadic and i don't trust her to take care of them (for the obvious reasons) i asked my boyfriend if it was okay for me to hang on to the turtles for a couple weeks until either her brother or the aspca picks them up. HE SAID YES! whee! so i'll get to foster two more turtles (for a little bit)!!

taking them home tonight yay talking her into it took no effort whatsoever to talk her into it. ----she has them in the small container again. said she cleaned the tank but it's gross. they'll be in the clean 20 gallon before i go tobed tonight. i'll give the aspca a call tomorrow and arrangements to have them picked up. ---- Slip has a lot of swelling on his right side so the vet will be getting a call from of as well. ----my boyfriend deserves the praise for letting me take them in. he gets lots of kisses for it :):):)

One thing about the ASPCA and humane societies is that some of them carry out euthanasia. A turtle rehoming or rescue org would be the better choice.

that is very good timing steve! i haven't called anyone yet. my former boss said before that she would be happy to take them in. her sets are her kids so i know she'd take good care and she has had turtles before so she knows what goes into taking care of them. i'll talk to her first, he she is unable to take them in i'll call turtle rescue. thanks door the heads up ----browsing from the phone right now but i'll post pics (and rant) this evening.

okay, the rant/photo section :)

what angers me just as much as (if not more than) the fact that she gave excuses in lieu of taking care of the turtles was the fact that she flat out lied to me. the three main things she lied to me about were
1. when she finally got the setup she told me that they were eating well and very active
--when i saw them they were not active, had no lighting & the filter was clogged from all the uneaten food (i.e. pellets)
2. she continuously told me her brother was going to take them in
--i talked to her brother yesterday and he never had any intention of taking them in.
3. she told me that she cleaned out the tank
--she never cleaned that tank

i'm baffled as to why she would lie to me about those things, especially since i find out the truth by simply opening my eyes, or asking a simple question. no probing necessary. if you can't take care of them, or don't feel you want to take the time, be honest. it's why i gave her the number for the aspca the day she got them. don't feed me lies instead. i took the turtles they have a good home with me, until they find a new home w/ someone else. i didn't call her on the lies (and the two people on my myspace friends list, don't mention it there, please). not to be a backstabber, but just to prevent exacerbating the problem. if i get too hostile it'll serve no purpose but to make things worse all around. *sigh*

yeah, i'm a little resentful about it.

pictures:

unfortunately i did not get home until 2:30am so the poor honeys had to spend one more night in this awful thing:
Image

this is the shape the tank was in when i brought it home:

i took a full concentration of vinegar to it, scrubbed, rinsed, scrubbed, rinsed. did the same with all the deco that went in the tank. it smelled pretty bad too.

this is the filter:
what no bag? i gave her 4 bags to go with the filter.
Image

you can kinda see it's been beaten up in the L picture. not noticeable in the picture, but you could see its constantly being clogged up really did a number on it. so i tossed it and bought a new filter. whisper 20g filter (as soon as the turtles are picked up the tank will be used as a breeder tank for feeder fish)

slip & slide's foster home:
Image

you can kinda see in the corner... i finally found the anacharis. yay! that stuff breaks up easy, oy, but the rosies are picking at it right now. the turts are still pretty skittish, haven't explored much, so the rosies are safe (for now).

and of course, the turtles of the hour!!!
Image

slide stayed tucked in his shell, slip tucked himself in for a little bit, then withdrew head & front legs to look around :)

john and aeryn are doing great. bought a pleco for their tank, it's in hiding i would assume b/c i see neither the pleco nor any pleco bits. it's bigger than them so i don't think they'd chew it up in one bite. we'll see.

Their new home is gorgeous!! Once they come out of their shells (so to speak) they'll be very happy. You're a real role model for taking care of turtles.
