General Care Discussion :: update on slip and slide

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

it's been a crazy weekend :) but i wanted to let y'all know what was up with the little fosters.

they're both doing good - giving me eye contact (though not quite trusting enough to be as playful as john and aeryn, understandable), very active, eating like it's nobody's business. i did their measurements ~ slip's at 2" exactly and slip is about 1 1/2" unfortunately they look like they may have beginning stages of shell rot, there are small discoloured spots on their shell. i probed their shells and there don't seem to be any soft spots other than the normal baby shell bit.

unfortunately they did have to deal with a bit of stress today. my boyfriend bought a new entertainment centre and a lot of stuff got moved around, tank included. so i had to drain the tank and keep them in a temporary enclosure for about 30 minutes. my cat, being very much a turtle cat, came by to watch them and even played with one of them for a bit. took a video of that :)

and excellent news! they're getting a new home! i talked to my old boss from sally's and she said she would love to take them in. i gave her directions to a store that has great deals on setups and she'll be picking them up as soon as the habitat's ready. whee!

i'll post the pictures and videos later on this evening.

That's great pumpkin! Glad you found them a new home.

I have bee wondering about cats and turtles. My wife wants to get a cat, but I'm worried it will bother the turtles while they're trying to bask. My old cat never bothered the box turtle that I used to have, but I've still been concerned. Have you ever had any problems?

Anyone else have cats go after their turtles?

my turtles spend most of their time in the water, i try to avoid taking them out, and the basking areas in both tanks are setup so that they aren't easily reachable by anything other than turtles or myself.

the most the cat's done is bat at them a little, try to sniff them. she'll stick her paw in the water to try to drink it (a nasty habit that i'm trying to break her of with no luck so far), but she won't actually bother the turtles. she'll sit by the tank and watch them, and she just bats at the tank and does little flips when she's playing with them.

as far as the turtles go, initially they would freak out and hide whenever they saw her, but now they hardly pay her any mind.

I have a cat My turt tank is on a stand in b/t two book cases. Even if the cat wanted to bother them he couldn't. Reece (my cat) does however like to sleep on the back of the couch and listen to the waterfall sound.

my little one just got its stand back (hence the shifting) and the big one is covered. lily (the cat) does the water-paw bit when i'm cleaning :) she knows better than to jump in or around the tank, so she doesn't have much opportunity to touch them. i keep her as guard whenever i take the turtles outside for real sunlight (like i had to do when john was sick), and she alerts me to any escape attempts with her curiosity. the larger tank has already been planned out, and we can get materials real cheap. scheduling conflict has delayed it. but it is covered. she just bats on the glass, has never at any point attempted to tried to climb on it.

i'm working on uploading the videos and pictures right now. i'll be posting them in the photo gallery.
