Habitat - Indoor :: Water evaporation

Turtle tank setups and other indoor configurations.

I have a 55 gallon tank and am losing water to evaporation I am assuming fairly quick. I am putting a gallon of water probably every other day and I know that doesn't seem like a big deal but the problem is that I have a Whisper power filter and the water level drops below the cutouts in the tube and then it starts sucking air and its my daughters bedroom and she can't sleep with the noise. On one half of the tank is the hood/light that came with the tank, then the other half I have a screen top that my uva/uvb lights are sitting on above the basking area. Is this common and why is it evaporating so quickly? Is it the lighting and if so what can I do to help the problem? Thanks.

I don't know where you're located, but I've always noticed that water evaporation is greater when the weather gets colder and drier. Water will evaporate in hot weather as well, but if it's hot and humid, not as much. The drier the air, the more evaporation.
