Habitat - Indoor :: Resting Spot

Hey guys,

I have been reading around about water levels and stuff, and I would like to raise my turtle water level, but I am concerned he wont have anywhere to sit and be able to stick his head out. Right now he uses his viney plant that I have covering a corner- (he sits in the middle of the vines and leaves and sticks his head out) - that has a large rock that he sits on and sticks his head out.

I am concerned that if I raise the level he wont be able to find any spots to sit and just rest. Any suggestions on what I could build/buy to accomplish this?

His tank is 10 gallons, and he is just a little guy... about an inch, if that.

Any suggestions would be great!

Does the turtle have a basking dock?
He needs a place to completely dry off if he doesn't have one already.

As for resting spots, floating plants work very well, most hatchlings enjoy them.

As Meg said, your turtle needs a place to completely get out of the water & dry off under a nice toasty lamp.

Many people like to use the ZooMed floating basking dock. These are available at any Petco & Petsmart stores, or "Dr. Foster & Smith" website. The good thing about the floating basking dock is that it floats up & down with the water level so you can fill up your tank more.

I think I may have not been as clear as I should have been. I have a floating dock for him to bask on, and he uses it when no one is in the room. I just don't want him to feel like thats his only place to sit and not swim(especially when he is uncomfortable).

He likes to sit and stick his head out and then swim around, and then stop and sit and stick his head out. This works fine with the level the water is at as I have a rock and plant that works fine for this.

I was just wondering if there was something else I could put in the tank(perhaps a certain shaped plant??). Any ideas would be great.

Although I think it may be too large for a 10 gallon......
Anyhow it has a small suction cup so you can attach it to the tank above the waterline.

i have the heater at an angle in cujos tank and he always rests on the top of it with his head out of the water

Yes, the floating plants work great.
My turtle loved them as a hatchling.

Thank you guys for all the wonderful replies! I think I will reposition the plant in his tank so its easier to climb on, and then I can up the water level! The new tank thing has finally cleared up! I wonder if it stays like that.... Anyways heres hoping!

I have one of those gigantic plants too. It was $15 at Petsmart. It sits on the bottom like a regular plant then goes up and across the top of the water a good 2 feet (I have a 55 gallon). Harvey loves it- he sleeps in there and is always swimming in and out of it. I had it in a 29 gallon and it worked well in there too.

I have these small fake plants that have suction cups and I suction them so they are in the water but there is enough out of the water for them to sit on them and they do. The plants were cheap only about $1 each.

We got a couple of bright orange and red plants from Petsmart for about $6. One sticks up out of the water and the other has long branches that float on the top. They love to 'ride the waves' on them though.

My turts love their floating log they just grab a hold and float or climb on top.
