Habitat - Indoor :: Rubbermaid Question

My brothers 50gal tank just got taken out on accident in the prep for thanksgiving (A folding table took out a tank corner. Luckily the turtle was on his basking platform outside of the tank...) and I've got his turtle in a 20gal storage case till tomorrow when Home Depot or Lowes opens. Now I've searched and found some talk on use the rubbermaid containers. I was wondering is there any negative impact to leaving a turtle in one?

I was looking into one of those clear 54Gal containers they have for the holidays and would this be an safe container for a turtle to stay in permanently or at least till summer?

Lots of people use rubbermaids, the main concern is that they're not meant to hold water for long periods of time, so you have to inspect them frequently for cracks, and you never want to fill them more than half way. But it's a good solution for a situation like this. Others who've used them can probably offer more advice on how to reinforce them.

My son has his 1.5" hatchling in a 24 gal rubbermaid, it's filled up to a few inches from the top and the sides really aren't bowed that much. The back & one side is against the wall (corner) so that prob helps some. I'd think the larger the container the more you'd need to reinforce it though. They're really not that strong, but it's a good, cheap solution for short-term anyway. I do check for stress cracks / etc frequently though.

I'm probably going to get one of the large stock tanks in the summer which is why I wanted to know if it was okay to use it that long. I'll probably reinforce it with 2x4s frame and plywood walls...


I could probably use the 1mil rubber/plastic pond liner Home Depot sells to make a custom tank if I can't find a stock tank in a sane distance
