Yeah, that would be fine. I've never heard anyone specifically say a certain inch size. That would be safe though.

Well like you said the smaller ones need the added heat and I figure I may as well ask, its better to make an azz of myself and ask a ton of questions to be more safe then sorry.

On thing I'm doing is taking all the info I get and builiding my own personal care sheet that will cover everything from water temps to feeding etc.

MBW, just remember these (temp. ranges) are guidelines, not absolutes. Your turtle will not suffer if the temp is 83 degrees or 81 degrees instead of 82 as long as it stays relatively constant. The odd change, like when you perform a water change, will not harm your turtle. He/she may in fact enjoy the 'splash' of cool water occasionaly.

Everyone has their own personal preferences that work just fine for their turtles. For example, even though the adult temp range is 74-78F, I will likely never allow the temp in our tank to go below 78 degrees F, but that is because we will also have fish (pleco, feeders) in our turtle tank and I prefer (from my fish experience) to keep all my tanks at 78 degrees F.

Thats just my comfort zone and it will work for the fish and turtle as well.

Try to enjoy the set-up process & don't obsess too much over the details, or you will end up like me - balding! The fact that you are trying very hard to do the right thing for your turtle is great & will result in him/her having a great place to live and being very happy.

I doubt I'd go bald but I'd probably have those momets where I look in a mirror wonder what in the heck did I just get myself into lol

The main thing right now is the stand and tank... I found a 72x24x30 I want at a local petsotre thats all glass with the standard black aquarium trim with the inner lip so making a custom ATBA should be a breeze. They said it would run about $1,190 I'm guessing thats without tax... in either case just for tank and stand alone I'm probably looking at I'd say about $1,600 or so and that right now is somethin that wants to make me cry lol. But hey its only like a month n a half to two months of work. Right now though I'm between jobs and have been for almost 8 months now so that why I'm looking into just that little stuff like heaters and stuff right now. But ya I figure I'll probably go for about 82 - 84 until about 3" then do what you do and try to keep it at about 78 from then on out.

just wanna jump in here while everyone's still at the discussion

i got a 200w stealth in a 40g set to like 85F but the water temps just wont get over 70F....I put another small heater used for my old 20g and it didn't help either.

Is this normal?

My house is always around 19-20C and hotter during the summer.
Water temps didnt go up even in the blazing hot summer...

No, thats not normal. Something is wrong, and the heater isn't working.

After watchng this post I think I might want to end up going with three heaters. I mean after all 240g is alot of damn water to heat up with jut two.
