Yes, 200watt is perfect for a 55g. I only got the 250w because it was only a few dollars difference and it would be around when I upgrade from the 55g i have now.

yea it is only a few dollars difference, i just wanted to make sure that a 200 watt would be ok for my 50 gallon . i also checked ebay & some people are selling their 200 watts for about $18 !!

of course there's shipping, so i've been taking that amount into consideration also. i've also been seeing that the 250 watt are being sold about $4-5 more than the 200. so i'm thinking about buying the 250 watt instead. like you said, it's only about a few dollars difference . i think i saw the 250 watt being sold for about $24 (including shipping).

yea! i looked up the average prices of the water heater & it's about the amount you said. i will definitely be looking at ebay more often. i'll probably be getting my digital thermometer from there too .

if i get the whisper air pump for my 50 gallon, what's the lowest pump should i get? would it be ok to get a 40 gallon whisper air pump or does it have to be a 50 gallon air pump? also, is it bad to a 100 gallon air pump?

yeah a 40g pump should be fine. a 100g pump is really powerful, sometimes too powerful. when i say too powerful i mean it creates froth on the water.

Like it looks like the water is boiling because of so many bubbles coming up, and then it creates a bubbly foam at the water line sorta.

oh i see. definitely won't get the 100 pump then, lol. i'll look for the 40 gallon pump. is the 30 gallon pump too small for a 50 gallon tank?

See I dont really get why they rate the pumps like that, its kind of ignorant. It doesn't matter what gallon the tank is, it's all about the size of the airstone you plan on using.

I mean, you could have a 20g tank, but have a massive airstone that no way in hell could a 20g pump be enough to power. you'd need a 100g pump to get it flowing. you see what i mean?

So what size air stone are you planning on running?

whatever you want to use really, what affect are you going for?

Bubble wall, circular bubble disk, square, etc. and how big. then i can better recommend a size for an air pump.

i never knew there were so many different kinds of air stones. i think i just want it to look simple, but decorative at the same time. of course i want it to pump out enough air. i'm not sure if i've seen a bubble wall. i don't think i want the bubble disk or square type. what kind of air stone would you recommend?

THANK YOU!! I've always wondered this question- never asked anybody tho. I always wondered why they rate air pumps that way. Now I am completely fine with buying the cheapest air pump.
