Hi combatbaby! I had the EXACT same problem - everytimer my tank gets dirty I changed ALL the water, and scrubed, and filled all day!! HaHA...Well now that problem is a thing of the past, and I don't have any fancy filters or whatnot.
What I do (I have river rocks on the bottom), and so I have a python (that hose with a bigger tube on one end, every pet store has them). I clean my rocks with that thing, plus it pumps out some of the water (I usually go 50-70%) Then I take the python, place one end of it on the filter sink nozzle, and the other one in the shopping basket (a whole-wall shopping basket, great for filling my aquarium)
That's it! Then I add special algae removal liquid (you can ask for it in the store, it's cheap and food-safe) I put 3 cups for my tank and I have no algae problems anymore!
I hope that helped, but I think it's whatever is easier for every individual, everyone has their own system :)

Any pet store sweetie! just ask whoever works there, it's usually where all the cleaning supplies are, such as filters and sponges

Or online. Online is usually the cheaper way to get something like a Python. ;)
