My dad wouldnt let me do sand :/ so i filled it up with river rock that i had, but i dont have enuff to fill the whole tank. i dont no if ill get more rocks or keep it the way it is. 1/2 the tank is filled with rocks. and i also got a jungle plant amapollo exo terra. my turtle tried biting the leaves 3 times and failed. do u think she will eventually learn its fake and cant eat it? shes unsupervised right now. hope she aint trying to eat it still...

I think that will be plenty of river rocks. You may even want to take some out at some point, since they tend to trap a lot of debris.

I'm sure she'll figure out pretty quick that the plant isn't food. Those plants are pretty sturdy, so they'll stand up to a few nips. Just keep an eye on it, and make sure there are no chunks missing!

I always love the look of tanks with a background... Maybe I should think about getting one!

As for the plant, if she's eating it, I say toss it NOW. It's not worth the risk... she could get sick or die from swallowing plastic like that.

There's no need for sand in my opinion, really. And small gravel (like for fish) is also a pretty bad idea because turtles can eat the little pebbles and choke to death. I had river rocks in my tank for the longest time and ended up taking them out because all they do is collect and hide food particles and algae. The filter can't get to the poop and the food that has settled beneath the rocks, so all they do is just create messy tanks and cloudy water and grossness. Turtles do fine without substrate on the bottom of their tanks. But, if you want more river rocks I'll ship mine to you if you'll cover shipping. I hate them.


I love the stuffed turtles there, by the way! That's a friggin niiiiice tank stand. Lucky duck! The eggcrate ontop and the hood look really nice. Everything's so streamlined! Mine is totally haphazard looking, haha. But you should get her a medium-sized tank ornament. It looks really empty in there and turtles like to hide behind stuff and have something to anchor themselves to while they sleep. (Be sure to not get one that she can swim through and get stuck in, though!)

I would get a hammock. At first mine used it occasionally, now they ALWAYS sleep in it ALWAYS.

make sure you have a uva and uvb bulb for your turtle

yes... i have a reptisun 10.0 uvb 18" and an incandescent. its about 94 degrees on it.

Out of curiosity why didn't your dad want sand in the tank?

Meta - Are you running Biomax in your canister? Do you have algae growth anywhere besides your dock?

Rubicon- i have that algae on the end of my dock to. is that ok to have? or should i take it out and clean it or is there to put something in the tank.

i have biorings and pads in my filter. sometimes algae grows on the glass but i scrape it off. the dock is where most algae is. y. algae = healthy
