Habitat - Indoor :: My Turtle just wants to bask and not eat

Turtle tank setups and other indoor configurations.

Post Posted: Mon Nov 23, 2009 9:35 pm   My Turtle just wants to bask and not eat

It seems like over the last week or so my turtle does not seem to want to eat and just wants to sit on his basking dock. He did eat some lettuce that I had put in there but nothing much else. I've tried blood worms, carrots, different food but nothing. I'm starting to get a little worried.
Could he be trying to hibernate? He has never done that before. I was thinking the change in season here in Seattle it is grey all the time. I can hear him at night banging around. His water temp is good, water quality is good. Just don't know. I do notice that he's been keeping his eyes closed when he is in the water. Could that mean something?
I've never seen him behave this way before, could he be sick?
Thanks for any advice!

What exactly is the temp of the water and basking are ("good" says nothing)?

Does your turtle have a submersible water heater? If not, and if the weather is getting cooler/is cool, he should have one. Seasonal changes can affect the appetite, especially if the water isn't kept at a constant temp and cools.

What is your RES's diet like? What foods is he fed?

The water temp is 75 degrees, basking area is at 80/82. He does have a submersible water heater. As far as I know the temps are constant.
I give him turtle pellets, carrots, red leaf lettuce. Recently I've tried giving him blood worms, dried baby shrimp but he doesn't seem to want anything. I also notice that he is keeping his eyes closed alot when he is in the water, I haven't seen him do that before. Could there be something in the water that is irritatating his eyes. He seems to be active at night, you can hear him pulling his plants around the tank and jump off and on his dock.
But he's also not as social as he usually is, which is weird.
Any ideas???
