My filter works great but i dont know what to do about the algae, my turtles love to nibble at things in the tank and i would hate to see a fish die, is there a different way to dealling with the algae that doesnt involve fish?
I use a scrub brush that only gets used on the tanks, and I use an old soft toothbrush for the turtle itself.
You mentioned not wanting fish to die...turtles will eat almost anything that is presented to them and fish are not safe in the same tank. If you really don't want the fish to die, then the best thing to do is remove them.
Depending on how much algea there is in the tank, I wouldn't worry about it. Usually if I haven't done a full water change in a while, I get little spots of algea in the corners of the tank, but it doesn't do any harm, and it gets cleaned out next time I clean the tank.

An algae eater is not the best way to deal with it. Reducing the cause of it is a better way to control it. Don't leave the lights on for more than 12 hours, keep sunlight away from the tank, conduct regular water changes, aerate the water, use a water conditioner and feed out of the tank are some of the things you can do to reduce algae.
