Im gonna upgrade to a 165 gallon this week so im thinking of building a 250 watt metal halide lamp. (Ive done it many times before). The halide will obviously produce the heat and the UVA but will it produce sufficient UVB? If I still have to use the UVB lamp im not going to bother...

I believe you will need to get a UVB light also. Those lights usually have a "shield" in the lamp covering to diminish any UV rays. If it does produce UVB then that shield would block the necessary UVB rays.
