I don't think walmart carries UVB bulbs and I've never seen one as cheap as $5.

I would get the thermometer if you don't have one yet. As for the bulbs, if you're looking for a uvb light, you need to make sure it says "uvb _%" on it. If you're just looking for extra lighting and you have a fixture that works, by all means, go for it :)

Compact UVB lights look very similar to energy efficient compact fluorescent lights.
