Habitat - Indoor :: New above tank basking area

Turtle tank setups and other indoor configurations.

I completed an above-tank basking area for my two turtles. They love it! I used plexi-glass so that the light would shine through and keep the tank bright. I also used one of the floating turtle docks backwards (with the suction cups) to give them a ramp up to a rock on the plexi-glass. It is working like a charm and it has given them 65 full gallons of swimming area.

Thanks for all the tips and advice on this site!

How cool! So they like to go up and bask in it?

Absolutely! They are relatively shy baskers (when I walk into the room they panic and jump into the water) so I started them on the ramp by placing treats on it. I left a trail up the ramp and onto the rock. The next day, all the treats were gone. Now, whenever I go into the room, one of the turtles is up on the rock or the ramp basking. So it seems to be a success.

If you don't mind me asking, what did you use to make it?

I used melamene (sp?) and plexiglass. Three sides are melamene and the front is thin plexiglass. After nailing, gluing and painting it, I placed it over my tank. Before that, I had placed a thicker plexiglass on one half of the tank, with a large basking rock. Finally, I attached the turtle ramp to the tank glass and the above tank plexiglass using the suction cups.

Hope this is not too confusing....
