Habitat - Indoor :: fishy smelling tank

ok, so i got my turtles some guppies and ghost shrimp at my local petco yesterday.i dropped the gang of fish and ghost shrimp in the tank and went along and minded my own business,an hour later when i came into my room it stank realy bad! it smelled like fish,dead fish..i couldnt take it so i slept in the living room in hope that in the morning the smell will go away..well it didnt! it was actually worse so i gave the guppies away to a pet shop and cleaned the tank realy good (i kept the ghost shrimp) then after 9 hours...my room smells fresh and clean..im just kind of traumatized by my guppie experience,i dont think i ever wanna buy some.does it happen to any of you when you put guppies in the tank?

Are you using charcoal in your filter?

Charcoal helps absorb odors....adsorb actually.

never had that issue and i keep a few guppies in a spare tank. in the same room, no smell.. Only a tiny filter too...

Maybe the pet store needs to change their water?

Yes, it could be the pet store water. Those feeder tanks can get pretty nasty around here.......

Some are better the others around here. It seems like all people want to breed is tuffies and feeder goldfish... The tuffies are too big, and guppies, well they came to small... i'm waiting for them to do their thing.

see thats the thing i didnt use the pet store water i fished them out with a net.one by one..maybe it was my tank that needed a cleaning,but my tank NEVER smelled like fish so i dont know.my filter is acting weird right now its one of those waterfall type filters and instead of shooting a straight waterfall the waterfall is "lopsided" has anyone had this happen?is something wrong with my filter i just cleaned yesterday.by the way its whisper power filter rated for 60 gallon tanks,im useing it in a 30 gallon rubbermaid with my two turtles i plan on upgradeing this xmas.im probably going to spend more than half of my xmas money on my turtles,gosh i spoil them so much.

Maybe your filter is clogged on one side? That's the reason it's making the water flow unevenly. That's my guess...

but i did a full clean yesterday,i scrubbed everything and cleaned the filter realy well i even put a new bio bag in it..i tried calling the tetra hotline but weekend are not buisness hours for them.

That's really weird...when you clean the filter, do you run a paper towel (or brush) through the input pipe?

uhmm,i use a clean toothbrush but..thats it.i know it is,i mean i could careless if it looks less pretty but i dont want my filter to blow.

Well I'm stumped. Does the filter have a warranty on it that you could claim?

it has a two year warranty,do you think i should exchange it for a new one?

When my Aquaclear's waterfall looks "lopsided," it's usually because the intake is being impeded by something, either up in the tube or, more often, at the base (usually leaves from the veggies they've been given are stuck at the intake tube). Clearing them away returns the flow to normal. If the filter isn't sitting level, this also could do it.
