Ok, Michelangelo's Apple Snail (the mystery snails as they are also called) died the other day. So of course it's winter time, no where to bury it, can't flush it, needless to say it's in the freezer till it can be buried. But anyways, Michelangelo is having a royal fit over the snail not being there. She's figured it out and she's really upset by it. (I think she liked having the snail to literally push around and to hang out with under the doc)

So I went to pet store number 1..they only had itty bitty ones, and she could eat those in one bite, and the one that died was the size of a tennis ball. So I go to pet store number 2. They said that it is now illegal to have apple snails. Soo..I got another pleco.

But I was wondering..does anyone know of any sites that I can get an apple snail from? She's still going nuts because there's no snail in the tank and I would like to have another one. Plus she's gotta calm down or she'll have a freakin heart attack at the rate she keeps looking for the snail and not finding him.

So if anyone knows I would appreciate it. Thanks!

Sorry to hear your loss of the snail, but they have snails the size of tennis balls?!?!?! Sorry this doesnt answer your question but I can't imagine a snail being that big

Thanks I may try that one ebay with 3 and see if he has just one, cause the other places want a minimum order of like 30.00 and all I want is just one snail..maybe two (but I don't want baby snails..)

The hard part about one website I found is that you have to have a permit. It's like geesh..I just want one snail and he's not going anywhere outside..he stays in my room in the tank. Next thing you know they'll want permits for ghost shrimp.

Actually I asked the one guy on ebay about his snails..they are too small. She'll eat them. I guess maybe she'll just have to live without them.

We Still have a pet store that sells them. Why would they be illegal??

I have four the size of ping pong balls that I bought at Petsmart in California.

I think people consider them to be pests because if they are outside and multiply they can eat live plants like there is no tomorrow.

So I'm going to keep looking. It'd be nice to have some back in the tank.

hmm, i wonder if it would manage to survive in my tank. my turtles will snatch at the shells i put in there, but won't go beyond a quick snap unless i break it up.

I am having the same problem in finding Apple Snails here in PA. I have a cruddy, little pet store down the street from me that I prefer not to support and I have only found them there.

I did some research on the topic(because I really could use some snails!) and this is what I came up with...

"Nonindigenous aquatic species impact an ecosystem in many ways. One of these is the restructuring of established food webs. For example, when these snails introduced into the Great Lakes occurred in Sandusky Bay, Lake Erie, Ohio, in the 1940s, they reached high densities in Sandusky Bay. Therefore, fishermen often made seine hauls containing "2 tons" of snails. This is done through competition with native species for food and space, which may result in the total devastation of a native species."

I suspose this is due to people not being responsible and dumping them anywhere. It's a shame. Maybe the board could pitch in to get someone here a permit and then we could order through them!

Well I talked to the AZ garden people and they're like no permit no snails. I'm like how the heck do I get a permit? I just need one big snail!!

So I went back to ebay searched around again, and found this guy who had a bunch of snails for sale. You can buy lots of 10 at a time. Well I bought two lots, giving me twenty snails. I'm like eh what the hey. They're little so at least I have 20 of them incase Michelangelo eats a few. I got them and instead of 20 I got 28. He included extra incase any died. I think one may have but oh well I'm not worried about it. I've got 27 snails running around! I really didn't need 27 snails..but oh well. This tank ought to be spotless soon!

Honestly the waste load that you're going to get from 28 snails might outweigh the algae they will eat. Apple snails aren't the greatest scum eaters and will devour your plants, with a capitol 'D'. Let me know how it goes though, I've only had about 8 apples at a time in my tank.

I want to get some of these Nerite Snails but that website has a minimum of 35.00$! And I've only seen them on eBay in packs of 100! Anybody have any luck with these snails?

Well I think most of my 28 died. There is only one or two that are active, and these are just baby things. Not very big. I put a plant in to see if anyone would go after it (I have all fake plants in my tank but had a spare live one I've been keeping alive for a while now just incase of emergency) and no one's even touched it.

Hmm, I used to have some of those in my saltwater reef tank and they are good algae eaters. I never thought of acclimating them to freshwater though. I wonder if that will shorten their lifespan any.
