I am disappointed to see that there seems to be a trend away from plecos in turtle tanks. I am a big proponent of plecos from my experience with tropical tanks, with one of my past plecos growing from about 2 1/2" to about 6" over a 5 year period until he finally died.
They will also eat missed/left-over pellets as part of their diet which helps keep the water, & filter, cleaner. Of course that doesn't apply if you remove your turtle to feed it.
I suspect that water quality may be an issue where plecos have died prematurely. Either dirty water (insufficient cleaning) or more likely the sudden change in water quality (pH, hardness, ammonia, temp, etc) when a large amount of water is changed out during regular cleaning/maintenance. Our water locally tends to be very hard (high mineral content) with low pH, so I usually need to pre-treat & filter it through a separate container (actually a large bucket) before adding to our tanks.
I intend to continue this practice with Spike's new tank as well as adding at least one small pleco that I hope will 'grow-up' with Spike over the years.
