Wow! Bean was in a little 10 gallon for a long time. When we got him the 29 gallon, he was about 5 inches long!
I knew the tank was still too small but, being tight on cash, it was a temporary move and it was better than the 10 gallon. He adjusted pretty quickly. He had never (and I mean NEVER) had a basking area and lights before the 29gal. How he stayed healthy and alive I don't know. Anywho, he would freak out a bit for a while but he warmed up to it and eventually basked without care after only a month or so. Now, he freaks if he's basking, or propped on his ramp, or even if he's got the tip of his nose out of the water for air. If he's anywhere close to the surface and he sees movement, POOF! In a flash he's gone and usually slams into the side of the tank. 
He does seem less scared after being outside for a while so I'll just keep letting him out every couple of days to ehlp him "brave up." I'm also thinking about buying one of those 12-15" round convex "security" mirrors and hanging it in the corner above his tank so that we can see him without going over and standing above him, and he can see us. Might help him a little.
