With maxium extension, the bottom of the intake sits at 13" below the outflow guides. When I say outflow guides, I mean the piece on each side where the water flows down and off into the tank.

So sitting on the tank, max depth is probably 13 1/2".

oh ok, thank you!! i'll do my best to fill the tank up as much as possible. for a 6 inch female RES, how far down do you think i should keep the basking area? like the farthest down so that she can't escape, but also as high as possible so i can fill up the tank?

Hmm. well standing on back legs, add 1", front leg reach, another 1", plus plastron length, so 8" below the top of the tank I'd say just to be safe.

That's if you don't have a top on the tank. If you have eggcrate or something else that wont block uvb, yet block a turtle from escaping, you could put that over the end of the tank and fill up the tank considerably more.

i do have some extra egg crate . if i use it to cover the tank, wouldn't there be some problems with my turtle absorbing the rays from the UVB bulb? how much higher can i raise the basking area if i have a cover on the tank?

Nice. No it won't affect absorbtion of UVB.
However, since the heat bulb could melt the eggcrate, and the UVB sticks out of the fixture a bit, I cut squares in the eggcrate. I cut them small enough so that the lamp cannot possibly fall through.


You can raise it quite a bit. Til about 3-5" from the top.

Also, to show you what a complete eggcrate screen looks like. This is on my moms 55g fish tank,
